Attorney Jan Perkins of Houston; ethically deprived

The state of Oregon provided Jan Lane Perkins with a law license in 1974.

The Oregon State Bar found Jan guilty of the following misconduct.
  1. Neglected a legal matter entrusted to him
  2. Failed to respond to numerous calls from his client
  3. Failed to take reasonable steps to avoid foreseeable prejudice to client’s rights
  4. Failed to notify his client of his intention to withdraw as her client
  5. Intentionally abandoned his client
  6. Knowingly violated his duty to the legal profession
  7. Engaged in the unauthorized practice of law while his license was suspended
  8. Improperly withdrew his representation of client (victim)
In on matter, Jan agreed to represent Lois Laurila to help her resolve complaints she had against her former and current landlords. After an initial meeting with Lois, Jan sent letters to both landlords describing her concerns. The current landlord called Jan to advise him of the landlord’s position.

In response to the landlord’s call, Jan made an appointment with Lois to visit her current apartment to determine if her complaints were well founded. Jan did not keep the appointment and did not advise Lois that he did not intend on attending the meeting.

Lois then contacted Jan’s office on numerous occasions and left messages for him to call to reschedule the meeting in order to resolve the dispute. Jan did not return any of the phone calls. After the initial phone call with the current landlord, Jan failed and neglected to take any action on behalf of Lois

As a consequence of his misconduct, the enablers for Attorney Misfits at the Oregon State Bar punished Jan by gifting him with a complimentary 60-day suspension of his law license.

As we speak (ca. September 2012) Jan practices at 2130 South Highway 6 in Houston, Texas.
