State Sen. Dean Florez of Bakersfield;  ethical pauper

The Senate’s Policy on Accident claims it will not pay for accidents that are personal or having nothing to do with state business.
In early 2008, Senator Dean Florez was involved in accident while driving a state-paid-for $49,627 Lexus LS400. The accident took place on March 8, 2008, which was a Saturday.

According to the Department of General Services, the Lexus was sideswiped and the property damage amounted to $14,642.45. For Senator Dean Florez to claim that he was engaged in “official state business” on a Saturday doesn’t pass the involuntary laugh test. In fact, the last legislative session was on Thursday the 6th of March. The Senate did not reconvene until Monday the 10th of March.

A review of the fuel consumption of Senator Dean Florez from 2003 through 2008 shows that he drove at least 211,600 miles for an average of 35,267 miles a year. To suggest that each and every one of these miles was solely dedicated to “official state business” is of course facially absurd.

Now, we all know that if were involved in an accident whether we are at fault or not, it will impact on your annual insurance premium. Therefore, Senator Dean Florez had a vested financial interest in having the State of California (that’d be you boys and girls) pay for the cost of this accident.

You’d like to think that Senator Dean Florez would have been satisfied with causing the taxpayers to purchase him a 2003 GHM Yukon Denali for $47,723.53, followed by a 2007 Lexus LS400 costing $49,627.63, right? In addition folks, Californians paid $31,785 for fuel, $9,690 for maintenance, $24,500 for lease costs, and $3,000 for insurance on Senator Dean Florez’s luxury rides while in the State Senate.

During the four years he was an assemblyman, Senator Dean Florez he spent another $16,054 on fuel, $8,671 on maintenance, $14,256 on lease costs, and $1,600 for liability insurance. Talk about sticking it to the overtaxed citizens of California!

Now the ethically bereft Senator Dean Florez wants Californians to elect him as the next Lt. Governor. If he is able to successfully dupe the voters, one can only imagine what the cost of the next luxury vehicle he selects will be. Will it be a Mercedes? Will it be a BMW? What about a Porsche Senator Dean Florez?
