Attorney James Smith of Fairhope, AL; tax scofflaw

The State of Alabama presented James McCauley Smith with a law license in 1993 after he graduated from Samford University School of Law.

The Alabama State Bar Association found Jimmy guilty of engaging in the following misconduct.

  • Failed to deposit earned fees into his trust account
  • Failed to file business and personal taxes from 2017 to 2022
  • Failed to safeguard client funds
  • Violated or attempted to violate the Rules of Professional Conduct, knowingly assisted or induced another to do so, or did so through the acts of another
  • Engaged in conduct that adversely reflects on his fitness to practice law

As a direct consequence of his misconduct, the apologists for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Alabama Supreme Court punished Jimmy by gifting him with a complimentary 1-year suspension of his law license.

As we speak (ca. March 2024), Jimmy practices his so-called brand of law in Fairhope, Alabama.
