Former Judge Joseph G. Edwards of Muncie, IN; liar, ethical elf

The state of Indiana presented Joseph Gordon Edwards with a law license in 1983..
For 13 years Joseph served as an appointed part-time court commissioner for the Delaware Superior Court No. 4. He also served as a part-time probate Commissioner for the Henry Circuit Court. In 1996, Joseph succeeded in duping the voters in the Muncie area into electing him as a Delaware Superior Court Judge.
During his tenure on the bench the Indiana Judicial Commission found Judge Edwards guilty of misconduct in his handling of a marriage dissolution matter involving Mr. and Mrs. Lambert.
At the time the dissolution was filed, Mr. Lambert was incarcerated as a suspect in the murder of a Muncie police officer. Mrs. Lambert was a frequent visitor of the Southside Gun Shop in Muncie. At various times, Joseph was the attorney for two employees and the owner of the Gun Shop. Subsequently, Ms. Lambert told the owner of the Gun Shop, Jim Crowder that she didn’t have enough money for a divorce or an attorney.
Crowder referred Ms. Lambert to Judge Edwards. Based on the referral from Crowder, Mrs. Lambert’s expectation was that she would pay Joseph for any legal services with sexual favors. Joe then agreed to represent Mrs. Lambert and filed a dissolution petition on her behalf. Ms. Lambert and Joe had sexual relations in exchange for his legal representation of her.
On occasion, Joe gave Ms. Lambert cash in exchange for sex. How sweet is that? On one occasions he gave her cash when no sex occurred. That’s even sweeter!
Subsequently, Joe fabricated a false divorce degree that also gave Ms. Lambert sole custody of her child. Joe went the extra mile in falsifying the divorce decree by having it affixed with an official court stamp.
The fake divorce decree was exposed when Ms. Lambert was involved in an adoption proceeding involving her only child. At that time Joe admitted he prepared the fraudulent divorce decree.
The Commission ruled that whenever Joe’s testimony conflicted with other witnesses it was deemed not to be credible. Put simply, the Commission found that Joe was a liar!
As is the case with most cowardly Judicial Misfits, Joey resigned his judgeship after he well knew he was going to be bounced off the bench. The Indiana Supreme Court rejected his resignation as nothing more than an overt attempt to have the disciplinary case against him dismissed.
As a consequence of his egregious misconduct, the Indiana Supreme Court ordered:
  1. Permanently enjoined from ever seeking judicial office in the state of Indiana
  2. Permanently enjoined from ever seeking reinstatement of his law license
  3. $100,000 fine which would be suspended upon him paying the State of Indiana for all judicial salaries as a part-time probate commissioner in the Henry Circuit Court and that he reimburse the City of Muncie for any wages paid to him as a part-time Deputy City Attorney
  4. Also ordered to pay the costs of the disciplinary proceedings
It’s absolutely amazing how someone of Joe’s ilk could ever be allowed to sit in judgment of anyone. Sadly, there are many, many Joe’s donning robes throughout the country.
