Judge Grant W. Hawkins of Indianapolis; ethical dwarf

The state of Indiana presented Grant W. Hawkins with a law license in 1974.

In 2011 the Indiana Commission on Judicial Qualifications found Judge Hawkins guilty of the following misconduct all of which related to his incompetence in handling post conviction relief matters.
  1. Failed to notify the Commission during its investigation that the Buntin file had been located
  2. Engaged in conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice
  3. Misrepresented (lied) that the Buntin file had been archived
  4. Conveyed a false impression (lied) to the Commission that a post-it note contained evidence as to the date an order had been prepared
  5. Failed to address bailiff Talley’s misconduct during the Commission’s investigation
  6. Failed to ensure that the Buntin PCR order was processed immediately and that the parties were notified of the order
  7. Failed to ensure that a hearing on the issue of Buntin’s release or continued incarceration was immediately scheduled
  8. Failed to comply with statutory requirements of the Indian Post-Conviction Rules
  9. Hawkins’ conduct brought disrespect to the judiciary as a whole
  10. Hawkins’ conduct caused the public to lose confidence in the courts
The despicable conduct of Judge Hawkins in regards to the Buntin Post Conviction matter, resulted in Buntin remaining in prison for an additional two (2) years despite the fact that his post conviction motion had been approved two years earlier.

As a consequence of his egregious malfeasance, the cheerleaders for Judicial Misfits sitting on the Indiana Supreme Court punished Judge Hawkins by gifting him with a 60-day suspension from the bench.

In there was true justice being dispensed by the Indiana Supreme Court, it would have ordered that Hawkins be imprisoned for two years. This would have been the only punishment that would have been just and equitable in this matter.

As we speak (ca. May 2012) Judge Hawkins remains sitting as a Superior Court Judge in Indianapolis.
