Attorney Marla Stein of New York City; convicted tax cheat

The state of New York presented Marla L. Stein with a law license in 1988 after she graduated from American University School of Law.

The Appellate Division, First Department Grievance Committee found Marla guilty of engaging in the following misconduct.

  • Pled guilty in federal court corruptly endeavoring to obstruct and impede the due administration of the internal revenue, a felony
  • In an attempt to lower her tax liability and in response to an IRS audit, Marla created false tax documentation indicating that two individuals, a medical professional who had performed medical services for a member of her family and a domestic employee had provided services to her law practice and had been paid fee income by her
  • Marla presented the false documentation to the IRS during the course of a 2013 audit of her and her husband’s joint tax returns for the 2010 and 2011 tax years to substantiate fake deductions and expenses
  • Marla was sentenced to a term of one year and one day of imprisonment, followed by one year of supervised release, 100 hours of community service and was also directed to make restitution in the amount of $99,546

As a direct consequence of her misconduct, the enablers for Attorney Misfits sitting on the First Department Grievance Committee punished Marla by gifting her with a complimentary 3-year suspension of her law license.

And lastly, as one would suspect, Marla and her firm fail to disclose the misconduct set forth above on their self-serving website at www.cmfllp.com. Apparently, they decided to conceal said relevant facts from prospective clients to prevent limiting their future victim pool.

As we speak (ca. May 2021), Marla practices her brand of law with Burns & Harris at 233 Broadway in New York, New York.
