Today’s Public Official Misfit is former Mahoning County Treasurer John Reardon  During his tenure as the Mahoning County Treasurer in Youngstown, Johnny ran a campaign in 2006 for the state auditor’s job.
After his unsuccessful run for state auditor, Johnny used fake loans from friends and family to make his campaign coffers look flush and then cut a deal with the Ohio Democratic Party to get out of the race in exchange for $115,000 in donations to pay off the bogus debts, according to a complaint filed with the Ohio Elections Commission. In May 2012, the Elections Commission dismissed the complaint against Johnny because the statute of limitations had tolled.
The Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office in Columbus commented that criminal charges would be filed against Johnny if warranted. In addition, the FBI and Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office has also been involved in investigating Johnny’s conduct.
Of course as is usual with Public Official Misfits, Johnny has denied any wrongdoing. I suspect that if he’s criminally indicted and made to do the proverbial perp walk that Johnny’s tune may well change and he would likely cop a plea.
Hopefully the sentencing judge will come down harshly on Johnny and order him assigned to Cell No. 214 where he’ll be roomed up with Clarice (real name is Clarence) at the Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown, Ohio.
As we speak (ca. May 2012) Johnny the Misfit works for a recycling company in West Virginia. This would be the perfect job for Johnny if the company specializes in “recycling the truth.”
