Sen. Lindsey Graham aims to pack Federal Courts with GOP judges only

This isn’t the first article and/or award that deals with Lindsey’s questionable conduct. In the past, he has been the recipient of thirty (30) Awards in various categories. Those awards are listed at the end of this article and can be viewed by going to the listed categories.

In a naked attempt to turn the Federal Judiciary into an arm of the right-wing faction of the Republican Party, Lindsey let the cat out of the bag by publicly admitting that he and his comrades were hellbent on so acting.

During a recent (ca. late May 2020), interview with right-wing ideologue and fellow comrade in arms Hugh Hewitt, Lindsey made the following admissions about packing the federal courts with right-wing ideologues, many of whom are totally unfit to sit in judgment of anyone.

  • “This is an historic opportunity.”
  • “If Trump can get four more years, I mean, it would change the judiciary for several generations.”
  • “So if you’re a circuit judge in your mid-60s, late 60s, you can take senior status, now would be a good time to do that if you want to make sure the judiciary is right of center.”
  • “This is a good time to do it.”

This is a disgusting admission on the part of a political party that truly does not care about justice. In fact, in Lindsey’s demented mind, GOP appointed judges are not expected to “dispense justice” but are expected to “dispense with justice,” especially when dealing with issues and/or litigants that are liberals or believe in equal justice for all.

FYI: To qualify for Senior Status, a judge must have served a minimum of 10 years on the bench regardless of his or her age. A Senior Judge is only required to work 10 hours a week while collecting the same pay as a fulltime judge, which is $229,500 for an appellate judge and $216,400 for a district court judge.

When a fulltime judge takes on Senior Status, it allows for the president to nominate another person to fill that judges position, thereby adding to the total number of GOP judges sitting on the appellate courts.

The Table below deals with the 12 Federal Circuit Appeals Courts and the columns therein deal with the following facts.

Column 1: Lists the specific Circuit Court

Column 2: Details number of congressionally authorized judicial positions

Column 3: Republican appointees (GOP)

Column 4: Democrat appointees (DEMS)

Column 5: Judicial positions exceeding congressional authorization

Column 6: GOP judges eligible for Senior Status as of April 2020

Column 7: GOP judges eligible for Senior Status if Trump reelected

If all 35 GOP appointed Circuit Court judges eligible to take on Senior Status prior to Jan 10, 2021 did so, it would increase the number of Republican appointed judges in the appellate division to 214. Moreover, if the 6 GOP appointed judges eligible by 2024 went on Senior Status it would further increase the total to 220.

The 7th and 8th Circuits have a combination of 29 GOP nominated judges vs. 3 Democrats. These lopsided numbers would likely make it difficult for anyone of a liberal persuasion seeking the dispensation of equal and/or fair justice who resides in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

I don’t know about you, but for Sen. Graham to unabashedly proclaim that he seeks a federal judiciary that is basically a one-party system beholding to the Republican agenda is abhorrent. According to Graham, anyone that opposes his right-wing agenda should not be afforded the opportunity to have his/her issues decided by an apolitical appellate court.

And lastly, I’m sure that my two Uncles that died in World War II and my father who served during that same War didn’t serve so that some right-wing ideologue like Sen. Graham could pack the courts with judicial lackeys to serve his and the GOP’s narrow-minded interests.
