Attorney Matthew Abel of Detroit, MI; ethical troll

The state of Michigan presented Matthew Abel with a law license in 1987 after he graduated from Wayne State University School of Law.

The Tri-County Hearing Panel #18 found Matty guilty of engaging in the following misconduct.

  • Ordered to pay restitution of $94,050.00 to his victims
  • Committed professional misconduct when he agreed, at the request of a long-time former client, to act as an escrow agent for a Bitcoin and cash transaction between a buyer and a seller who owed respondent's former client money
  • Negligently relied upon information from his former client that the seller had transferred the Bitcoins to the buyer when he had not actually done so and
  • Based on sham info from former client, Matty released the escrow funds from his office trust account
  • Failed to appropriately safeguard client funds
  • Failed to hold client funds in an IOLTA trust account

As a direct consequence of his misconduct, the apologists for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Michigan Supreme Court punished Matty by gifting him with a complimentary reprimand.

And lastly, as one would suspect, Abel fails to mention the misconduct set forth above on his self-serving website at www.cannabiscounsel.com. Apparently, he decided to conceal this relevant information from prospective clients so that he would not limit his future victim pool.

As we speak (ca. June 2020), Matty practices as the Senior Partner with Cannabis Counsel PLC at 2930 East Jefferson Avenue in Detroit, Michigan.
