Attorney John M. Thoma of Galveston; extortionist

The state of Texas presented John M. Thoma with a law license in 1969 after he graduated from the University of Houston.

For several years, John Thoma was County Court at Law Judge in Galveston County. During Johnny’s tenure on the bench, the Texas Judicial Commission found him guilty of the following misconduct.
  1. Conspiring to extort money from a party in an action in which he was the presiding judge
  2. Engaged in ex parte communications with criminal defendants relating to their cases in order to waive fees, fines, court coasts and attorney’s fees
  3. Conducted ex parte proceedings in order to fabricate a misleading docket entry
  4. Granted a criminal defendant’s application for restricted driver’s license w/o knowledge of DA
  5. Granted criminal defendants in DWI cases credit for “jail time served” in excess of the time they actually served
As a consequence of his egregious misconduct, the Texas Supreme Court ordered that Johnny be removed as Judge of the County Court at Law No. One of Galveston County, Texas, and the he be forever barred from holding judicial office.

Because Judicial Misfits in Texas are held to a lower standard of conduct then everyone else, Johnny was never criminally charged for extortion nor was his law license ever suspended or revoked.

As we speak (ca. April 2012) John practices law in the Galveston area.
