Attorney William Lim of British Columbia, CAN; greedy loser

The Law Society of British Columbia presented William H. Lim with a law license in 1977 after he graduated from the University of British Columbia School of Law.

The British Columbia Law Society Disciplinary Counsel found Billy guilty of engaging in the following misconduct.

• Instructed associate to draw up a loan agreement, but did not specify whether the four per cent interest was compound or simple, nor whether it applied to the amount of the loan only, or to the amount of the loan plus the $600,000 bonus
• Loan document drawn by associate specified that interest was to be calculated monthly, and compounded monthly
• Billy also drafted a promissory note referring to $2.5 million as the principal sum, specifying that interest of four per cent of the principal sum would be charged per month, calculated monthly and compounded monthly
• Four per cent compound interest per month on a $2.5 million loan produces an annual effective rate of 60.1 per cent
• The Criminal Code of Canada sets the threshold for a “criminal rate” of interest at 60 per cent per year

As a direct consequence of his misconduct, the cheerleaders for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Law Society punished Glenn by gifting him with a complimentary reprimand and a $8,000 fine plus $1,000.00 in costs.
