Judge Stephen E. Benson of Butte County, CA; scofflaw, Dumbo

The California Supreme Court presented Stephen E. Benson with a law license in 1979.

In November 2000, Benson succeeded in duping the voters in Butte County into electing him as a Superior Court Judge. While doing so, Benson found it acceptable to knowingly violate the California Political Reform Act by failing to disclose a $71,000 loan from his Daddy Helmer G. Benson.

In a lame attempt to disguise Daddy’s loan, Benson deposited the $71,000 into his own personal bank account, then later transferred the money into the campaign account and falsely listed himself as the source of the funds.

When the Fair Political Practices Commission audited Stephen they discovered his unlawful conduct. Subsequently, Stephen the Scofflaw admitted four violations of the Political Reform Act—misreporting (falsely) himself as the source of the loan, failing to report that his Daddy was the true source, and twice underreporting (lying) the amount of the loan. The Commission then fined Stephen $7,000, which didn’t mean anything since under California law he could pay the fine with campaign funds. Therefore, what's the point?

After pleading guilty as aforementioned, the California Judicial Commission filed misconduct charges against Judge Benson regarding his conduct.

The commission ruled that Benson acted unethically by failing to “be faithful to the law,” and to “comply with the law and t o act at all times in a manner that promotes public confidence in the integrity of the judiciary.” I don’t know what integrity these folks are talking about, do you?

As a consequence of his misconduct the apologists for Judicial Misfits sitting on the Judicial Commission punished Judge Benson by gifting him with a complimentary admonishment.

As we speak (ca. Feb 2012) Benson the Scofflaw remains sitting on the bench in Butte County.
