Former Judge David F. Crenshaw of Twiggs County, GA; crook

During his time as a Twiggs County Judge, the Georgia Judicial Commission found Judge Crenshaw guilty of the following misconduct.

David was moonlighting by running his mortgage company out of his Twiggs County, Georgia courtroom in Jeffersonville for 18 months in broad daylight. A county commissioner became suspicious when a customer asked for help filing out a loan application at 9 a.m.

The country commissioners let Dave hire an extra court employee when he said he needed more help. Dave didn’t tell the commissioners that she mostly worked for his mortgage company, which had the same address as the court. “I filed some tickets one time. That took about 15 minutes. I worked on two elections. Maybe 5 or 6 hours,” the new employee said.

Judicial Commission Hearing

At a Judicial Qualifications Commission hearing, Dave and his wife took the Fifth Amendment at least 80 times in refusing to answer questions. Makes Sam “Momo” Giancana look like a piker, right?  Before the Commission could act, a special prosecutor charged Dave with theft and in a plea bargain he agreed to resign, never run for judge again and pay restitution.

Why do plea bargains involving criminal conduct by judges’ end up allowing them to escape prosecution and/or prison time because the crook resigns from the bench? Why aren’t lesser beings afforded the same courtesy as these louses?
