Attorney Louis Stockman of Duluth, MN; slacker, repeat offender

 

The state of Minnesota presented Louis Andrew Stockman with a law license in 1993 after he graduated from William Mitchell College School of Law.

 

The Office of Lawyer Regulation found Louie guilty of the following misconduct.

 

Louie’s 1st bite at the Attorney Misfit Apple Tree

  • Negligently misappropriated stole] client funds
  • Mishandled client funds
  • Commingled client funds with personal funds
  • Engaged in a pattern of client-related misconduct
  • Failed to return contingent fee to client trust account
  • Failed to act with due diligence (slacker)
  • Improperly made loans to clients
  • Failed to maintain required trust account books and records
  • Shared legal fees with a non-lawyer assistant
  • Remitted personal funds to a client
  • Failed to clearly communicate the basis and rate of fees
  • Failed to provide client with a settlement statement

As a direct consequence of his misconduct, the enablers for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Minnesota Supreme Court punished Louie by gifting him with a complimentary 5-month suspension of his law license and assessed $900.00 in costs.

 

Louie’s 2nd bite at the Attorney Misfit Apple Tree

  • Failed to act with due diligence (slacker)
  • Engaged in the illegal practice of law
  • Neglected client matter entrusted to him
  • Made false statement to opposing counsel
  • Failed to properly supervise office staff
  • Failed to comply with and made false statements regarding his compliance with the notice requirements of a previous suspension from the practice of law
  • Failed to communicate with clients
  • Failed to respond to communications from opposing counsel
  • Failed to reply to opposing counsel discover requests
  • Displayed signage utilizing law firm and other designations falsely implying that he continued to be licensed to practice law while he was suspended
  • Improperly contracted for legal advertising in various telephone directories that would be distributed during the period of his suspension

As a direct consequence of his misconduct, the enablers for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Minnesota Supreme Court punished Louie by gifting him with a complimentary 6-month suspension of his law license and assessed $900.00 in costs.
