Chief Justice Margaret Workman of West Virginia; serial scofflaw

The State of West Virginia presented Margaret Workman with a law license in 1974 after she graduated from the University West Virginia School of Law.

It should be noted that Margie has had her significant snout firmly implanted in the public trough for the past thirty-seven (37) years. Apparently, no self-respecting law firm in the greater Charleston area was about to offer her a good paying job.

In mid-August 2018, the West Virginia House of Delegates voted to impeach Margie. She will subsequently face a trial in the West Virginia State Senate.

The House of Delegates found Margie guilty of the following misconduct.

  • Signed documents allowing for senior status retired judges to be paid higher wages than allowed by law
  • Overpayments to retired judges violated state law and only stopped when they were challenged by the IRS
  • Repeated abuse of her judicial authority
  • Failed to control her office expenses
  • Failed to maintain policies over critical matters

All that remains now is to see what the vote count is in the State Senate to have Margie permanently removed from the Supreme Court.

And lastly, despite her egregious misconduct, Margie will likely not suffer any consequences relating to her law license. Put simply, she’ll be allowed to practice law after the Senate votes to toss her off the bench.

As we speak (ca. September 2018), Margie has been temporarily suspended from her Supreme Court seat while awaiting judgment from the State Senate.
