Attorney Helen E. Brown of Detroit; Dumbo, unethical elf

In an earlier life, Helen E. Brown was a judge of the 3rd Circuit Court, Family Division in Detroit.

During her undistinguished tenure on the bench, the Michigan Judicial Commission filed misconduct charges against Helen.

While presiding over a hearing dealing with a custody case involving two minor children and after the plaintiff moved out of Michigan, custody was temporarily awarded to the maternal grandparents, as the defendant could not provide a suitable residence for the kids, and worked a midnight shift.

At the hearing, Helen had to determine if the house the defendant had purchased was suitable for the children, and confirm he was working a day shift so he could care for them.

During the hearing the grandparents raised the issue of where the children would spend the upcoming Christmas holidays. Counsel for the parties noted there were conflicts in the judgment of divorce, which clouded this issue.

Helen encouraged the parties to resolve the matter themselves, but they were not able to do so. Instead of issuing a judicially sound opinion that would be in the best interests of the children (it was her sworn duty to so act), Helen said she would decide the issue by the flip of a coin.

Despite protests from the attorneys, Helen produced a coin, allowing the defendant to call heads or tails. When he correctly called heads, Helen ordered that the children would spend the holiday with the defendant. This moron remains on the bench in Detroit.

As a consequence of her misconduct, the enablers for Judicial Misfits sitting on the Judicial Commission punished Helen by gifting her with a censure.

The Commission also made Helen promised that in the future she would refrain from resoling any dispute by flipping a coin. Isn’t that special?

An unreliable source indicated that Helen opted to toss a dishonest lawyer in the air in order to resolve any future custody disputed.

As we speak (ca. Jan 2012) Helen practices law at 1441 St. Antoine Street in Detroit.
