Justice Luis Gonzalez of New York City; scofflaw, lifetime porker

Luis Gonzalez received his law license in 1975 after graduating from Columbia Law School.

Since receiving his law license in 1975 Luis has dedicated his career to porking out at the public trough. In fact, Luis has never held a job wherein he didn’t receive a paycheck from the government. Put simply, he’s been goring on public pork for 36 years. Apparently, no self-respecting law firm in the New York City area was about to offer Luis a good paying job.

According to a New York Post article in early 2011, Justice Gonzalez lied on mortgage documents and received property-tax breaks he didn’t deserve. In addition, Luis made questionable hires that included his ex-wife.

In 2009, Luis took out a $510,276 loan on a Brooklyn house, attesting on the mortgage documents that it would be his primary residence. He then got a STAR tax break from 2009 to 2011 – a perk of $4,400 that is supposed to only to for a primary residence. However, Luis really resided in a rent-subsidized Grand Concourse apartment in the Bronx, a living situation that is also supposed to be his primary residence.

Luis admitted his duplicity to The New York Post, saying he designated the Brooklyn home as his main home to get the mortgage.

Jonathan New, a mortgage-fraud expert and former federal prosecutors, said it’s a federal crime – fraud – to lie on a credit application.

In addition to hiring his ex-wife as a $65,000-a-year court clerk, Luis signed off on the hiring of (a) his secretary’s brother, (b) his executive assistant’s nephew, and (c) the son of a court officer who used to be his driver. None of these folks had any prior state court experience. However, in a lame attempt at levity, Luis said they were all qualified. Clearly, Luis missed his calling as a stand up comedian.

Because Judicial Misfits are held to a lower standard of conduct than we are, it doesn’t appear that Luis had been criminally charged for his unlawful conduct nor has the New York Judicial Commission filed any ethics charges against him.

Who was the fool that said crime doesn’t pay? It damn sure wasn’t Luis!

As we speak (ca. Jan 2012) Luis continues to sit as an Appellate Judge. What a joke!
