Attorney William Laufer of Morristown, NJ; ethical dwarf

The state of New Jersey provided William M. Laufer with a law license in 1974 after he graduated from Albany Union University Law School.

In one matter, Morris County Prosecutor Fredric M. Knapp is pursuing ethics charges against former law firm partner William M. Laufer, who made alleged disparaging and harmful comments about Knapp during a court recess, including a remark that he had Knapp "in my pocket." (Peggy Wright)

The charges relate of an incident that took place during a break in a domestic violence proceeding before Family Division Judge Louis Sceusi. The ethics complaint accuses Billy of engaging in the following misconduct.

• Engaged in conduct involving fraud, deceit, dishonesty or misrepresentation
• Engaged in conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice
• Stating/implying he could influence improperly government agency or official

During a break in the domestic violence proceedings, Billy and defense attorney Angelo Sarno remained at counsel’s table talking. Their discussion was captured on the CourtSmart recording system. The recording evidences Sarno asking Billy if “the Knapp prosecutor” was his former partner.

Billy replied yes and went on to state:

• “Knapp is in my pocket.”
• “He does whatever I ask, he does.”
• “Twenty years he is my partner.”

All that remains is to see if the Office of Attorney Ethics charges Billy with misconduct. If they do, then we’ll have to see what if any punishment is meted out to Billy by the enablers for Attorney Misfits sitting on the New Jersey Supreme Court.
