Judge Beverly Scarlett of Hillsborough, NC; Judge Roy Bean Wannabee, Dumbo, loser

FYI: Judge Roy Bean was a saloon-keeper and Justice of the Peace in Val Verde County, Texas, who called himself “The Law West of the Pecos.” He was also affectionately called “The Hangin Judge.”

Beverly Scarlett was presented with a law license by the North Carolina Supreme Court in early 1994. Unfortunately for the citizens of the greater Hillsborough, North Carolina area (38 miles northwest of Raleigh) Beverly Scarlett ascended to her throne as an Orange County District Court judge in 2007.

Judge Scarlett found it acceptable in handing out excessive and outrageous bonds to those who were unfortunately enough to have to appear in her so-called court.

In one case, Beverly set a $300,000 bond for a man accused of violating a domestic violence protective order. Beverly had also set bonds as high as $300,000 or $1 million in some DWI cases.

When the chief public defender, James Williams sought to have Bev’s punitive and asinine $300,000 bond for allegedly violating a protective order reduced, she took umbrage.

Judge Scarlett then ordered Mr. Williams into court so that she could dress him down. In accordance with the Australian Rules of Court, she then ordered the courtroom closed to the public. When Williams appeared Judge Bean advised him the proceedings was intended to put him on notice of his unprofessional behavior and the responses she expected from him.

On July 6, 2011, reporter Anne Blythe of The Charlotte News & Observer wrote that Mr. Williams said he never experienced anything similar in his professional career, and worried that such a session was intended to have a chilling effect on the advocacy for defendants that he considered an important element of the judicial process.  (http://tinyurl.com/6fa4m97)

The Charlotte News & Observer then quoted Mr. Williams as saying, "All along I knew that all I had done was what I had taken an oath to do, to zealously, professionally and ethically represent my clients," Williams said. "For some reason, Judge Scarlett took those efforts as disrespect to her as a judge or as an attack on her integrity."
Come on Boyz and Girls; is it even remotely possible to disrespect the Dishonorable Beverly Scarlett?

Judge Scarlett’s So-called Punishment

As a consequence of her misconduct, the enablers/apologists sitting on the Judicial Commission and the North Carolina Supreme Court punished Beverly by gifting her with a complimentary reprimand.

Terms of the complimentary reprimand required Judge Bean to not repeat her punitive conduct. The comedians on the Commission and Surpeme Court also ordered Bev the Dumbo to familiarize herself with the Code of Judicial Conduct.

As we speak (July 2011) the Dishonorable Beverly Scarlett continues to sit as a judge in Orange County North Carolina.
