Rep. John Shimkus: Today’s “Moron” Award Winner

Johnny succeeded in duping the voters in the greater Danville, Illinois area into electing him as a member of the United States House of Representatives in November 2012.

During a recent (mid-March 2017) a lengthy markup session in the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Rep. Michael Doyle (D-Pa.) asked his colleague Shimkus to explain what he meant when he said premiums were “skyrocketing” in his state “because of the mandates from Obamacare.”

Markwayne and Doyle then engaged in the following colloquy:

DOYLE:

  • “What mandate in the Obamacare bill does he take issue with?”
  • “Certainly, not with pre-existing conditions, or caps on benefits or letting your child stay on the policy until 26, so I’m curious what is it we’re mandating?”

SHIMKUS:

  • “What about men having to purchase prenatal care?” Shimkus replied.
  • “Is that not correct? And should they?”

DOYLE:

  • “There’s no such thing as a la carte insurance, John.”

SHIMKUS:

  • “That’s the point.”
  • “We want the consumer to be able to go to the insurance market and be able to negotiate on a plan ...”

DOYLE:

  • “There’s not a single insurance company in the world that does that.”
  • “You’re talking about something that doesn’t exist.

Johnny’s argument would be akin to demanding a law be passed on auto insurance that would allow consumers to opt out of coverage for any of the following reasons.

  • Any accident that takes place after 6:00 pm
  • Any accident wherein a male driver is at fault (It’s always a woman who is at fault, right Johnny Baby?)
  • Any vandalism engaged in by a Born Again Christian (It’s always those damn Jesus haters, right Johnny?)

It’s difficult to imagine that there were enough dupes in the Danville area that were willing to vote Johnny the Moron into office. Hopefully, they’ll rethink this mistake and vote him out in the November 2018 election.

And lastly, I’m confident that Johnny would vote against any law allowing for an insurer to allow an insured to opt out of coverage for an annual colonoscopy. If this were a law, then how would we be able to determine how many assholes there are in congress at any given time?

Congrats Johnny; keep up the good work! We should let everyone know of your amazing record as one of America’s most disrespected “Morons”; you are far too humble.
