The state of North Carolina provided Porter W. Staples with a law license in 1985 after he graduated from the University of Texas Law School.

The Grievance Committee of the North Carolina State Bar found Porter guilty of the following misconduct.

• Failed to account for $81,570 bank mistakenly wired into his account
• Failed to perform quarterly trust account reconciliations

As a direct consequence of his misconduct, the supporters for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Grievance Committee of the North Carolina State Bar punished Porter by gifting him with a complimentary 3-year suspension of his law license.
