Judge Mary Ann Murphy of LA; Dufus and bereft of ethics

Ex-Gov. Pete Wilson was ill-advised when he agreed to appoint Mary Ann Murphy to judgeship in Los Angles in 1994.

During her insignificant time on the bench, Judge Murphy has consistently outpolled the vast majority of her compatriots on the LA bench via motions seeking her removal from cases she was assigned to. Put simply, many, many attorneys challenged her ability to be fair and unbiased by filing peremptory challenges against her. Over the course of only three years, nearly 150 attorneys so acted.

In addition to being a certified Dufus, Judge Murphy is also a serial thief by collecting dual benefits from the State and LA County for well over 10 years.

In the late 1990s, legislation was passed wherein the courts in California were all consolidated. This meant that all judicial salaries and fringe benefits would be paid for with state funds. Put simply, all California judges became paid employees of the state.

Unfortunately, this legislation did not stop Judge Murphy from double-dipping by collecting duplicate benefits from Los Angeles County that was already paid for by the state. The annual amount that Murphy illegally collected was about $40,000.

About a year ago, a California Appellate Court ruled that this double-dipping was unconstitutional, a ruling that was subsequently upheld by the California Supreme Court.

Can there be any dispute that Judge Murphy well knew that she was engaged in illegal conduct by billing the County and State for the same benefits? She may well be a certified Dufus, but she damn well had to know what she was doing was illegal.

As we speak (ca. Feb 2011) this certified Dufus and ethical leper-con remains on the bench in LA. What a joke!

And lastly, Judge Murphy never paid back one penny of the $400,000 or more illegally received from the overtaxed citizens of Los Angeles County.
