Judge John Shook of Los Angeles; loser, pimp for incompetent attorneys

In 1989, then Gov. George Deukmejian mistakenly appointed attorney John Shook to a judgeship in Los Angeles. John Shook earned his judgeship due to his longtime internship as a compliant lackey and bootlicker for the local political hacks in the greater Los Angeles area.

Several years ago, the California Judicial Commission found Judge John Shook guilty of playing favorites in repeatedly making court appointments to attorneys that were his and/or his wife’s friends (Pimping 101).

Over a lengthy period of time, Judge Shook repeatedly appointed attorneys that were his friends and/or were renting office space from him and/or his wife to cases wherein they were paid with County funds. Examples of Shook the Pimp are:

Shook pimping for attorney Ben Sadler
  1. From 1989 to 1996, appointed Sadler to criminal cases at least 78 times
  2. In 1993 Shook recommended Sadler’s membership in an attorney appointment to a panel called Southwest Indigent Defense Panel (SWIDP) to its administrators – Shook then appointed Sadler to numerous cases wherein he was paid by county funds
Shook pimping for attorney Robert Welboum

From 1989 to 1996, appointed attorney Robert Welboum to criminal cases at least 30 wherein he was paid by the county via PACE.  Again Shook the Pimp did not disclose to anyone that he had a longstanding social relationship with attorney Robert Welbourn, which included Welbourn paying for Shook’s lunches.

In some PACE cases, Judge Shook took Pimping to new levels when he allowed attorney Welbourn to bring his so-called billing statements for attorney fees directly to Shook in chambers for his approval, in total disregard of the PACE policy that before judicial approval, attorney fees were to be submitted to PACE for review and evaluation.

This is exactly the kind of Judicial Pimp (JP) ya want if you’re submitting sham, inflated and/or fabricated claims for attorney fees, right Mr. Welboum?

Shook pimping for attorney Joel Oiknine

When attorney Joel Oiknine told Judge Shook that he was doubtful he could afford the office rent he was offering to him. In response, Shook ascertained that Mr. Oiknine’s application to become a member SWIDP (county paid defense team) had been denied; Judge Shook told Oiknine if he rented space in his office building, he’d recommend Oiknine to SWIPD.

This pimping arrangement would then result in attorney Oiknine receiving criminal appointments from Shook, which would cover the rent he had to pay Shook. How cool is that?

Shook Pimping for attorney Stanley Granville

In this instance, Shook repeatedly appointed attorney Stanley Grave to criminal cases in which Shook was the presiding judge.

In appreciation for Shook’s Pimping Prowess, Granville, on at least two occasion paid for Shook’s lunch and his court staff. On one occasion when attorney Stanley Granville was paying off the Pimp Shook (PS), he paid for a limousine in which champagne was available to transport him to his favorite dining joint.

The enablers on the California Judicial Commission punished Shook the Pimp by gifting him with a complimentary admonition.

As we speak (ca. Feb 2011) this certified loser who enriched himself by acting as a Pimp for several loser lawyers remains on the bench in Los Angeles.
