Barrister Eugene Grant of Belfast, NI; lying loser

The Law Society of Northern Ireland presented Eugene Grant with a law license in 1977.

The Bar Council found Gene guilty of the following misconduct, all of which took place while he was representing a defendant in a major drug smuggling case.

  • Induced client to plead guilty by overbearing his mind and depriving him of discretion to make free and voluntary choice of pleas
  • Falsely told client he would have some input into the choice of judge who would impose sentences if he pleaded guilty
  • Failed to explain to his client that he should only plead guilty if he accepted that the Crown case was true
  • Told client he was in possession of information which he would not disclose to the client or other members of the defense team
  • Misled client concerning arrangements which could be made to his advantage through the Probation Service
  • Unacceptable failure to observe standards of professional conduct

As a consequence of his misconduct, the cheerleaders for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Disciplinary Tribunal punished Gene by gifting him with a complimentary £25,000 fine ($34,500 U.S. dollars).

As we speak (ca. March 2016), Gene continues to practice in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
