Ex-California Speaker-of-the-House Fabian Nunez - Scams re: State Cars

In a January 19, 2007 story in the LA Times titled “Turning to greener vehicles,” then Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez told the Times that since the lease on his (not yours, but his) Ford Explorer had expired he is driving a Toyota Prius. The following facts prove Fabian lied to the LA Times.
  •       Jan. 4, 2007 of “Lease Cars Assigned to Members” states as to Nunez: “2003 Ford Explorer”
  •       Nov. 30, 2007 list of “Lease Cars Assigned to Members” shows that on April 19, 2006, Fabian received a Toyota 4-Wheel Drive Highlander Hybrid LTD at a cost of $43,332.87
  •       Nov.30, 2008 list of “Lease Cars Assigned to Members” states as to Nunez: “Lease Car Not Requested”
Assembly Records re: Prius Purchases

The “bills of sale” on vehicles purchased by and titled in the name of the Assembly Rules Committee evidencing the purchase of a Prius shortly before and/or after Fabian’s remarks to the LA Times on or about Jan. 18, 2007 are as follows.

      12/01/08 – Assemblyman Chesbro – bought in Eureka

  •       11/27/06 – Assemblyman Feuer – bought in North Hollywood
  •       12/11/06 – Assemblywoman Brownley – bought in Santa Monica
  •       12/19/06 – Assemblyman Caballero – bought in Salinas
  •       03.02.07 – Assemblyman Krekorian – bought in Glendale
There is absolutely no record that the Assembly Rules Committee ever purchased a Prius on behalf of Nunez. If they did, then they have intentionally concealed said evidence from me.

Sweetheart Lease Deals for Fabian

The following facts establish that Fabian received quite a deal as to the lease costs on our Explorer and 4WD Highlander. Handwritten notes found on the April 19, 2006 bill of sale for the 4WD Highlander prove the following:

2006 Highlander 4WD costing $43,332.77

*      $103.99 = Fabian’s monthly lease payment = $1,247.88 per year
*      $937.50 = IRS mandated monthly lease payment = $11,250 per year

2003 – Eddie Bauer Explorer costing $34,413.39

*      $68.96 = Fabian’s monthly lease payment = $827.52 per year
*      $770.83 = IRS mandated monthly lease payment = $9,250 per year
*      $2,482.56 = Fabian’s lease payments for 3-years
*      $27,750 = IRS mandated lease payments for 3-years

How would you as a hardworking, overtaxed citizen of California and/or Los Angeles feel about leasing a 4-Wheel Drive Highlander for $67 a month along with free gas and maintenance? Or better yet, what about paying $104 a month to lease a Eddie Bauer Explorer? Well folks, you ain’t likely to get such a sweetheart deal! Would this be like cool or what?

However, on behalf of your dedicated legislators I’m here to tell ya that the only benefit you’ll ever receive is the right to pay for this unwarranted raping of the taxpayers. Put simply, since you ain’t no high-falooting legislative aristocrat, you ain’t gonna get no such deal!

Nunez garaging publicly-funded vehicles

Fabian told the LA Times on or about January 18, 2007 that: But, “when I’m in L.A, since I have a driver, I don’t use my car. It’s just parked in the garage.” A driver (aka, chauffeur) at your expense for ol’ Fabian, ain’t just peachy keen?

Assuming arguendo (legal term meaning “for the sake of argument”) that Fabian actually had a Toyota Prius garaged for the years 2007 and 2008. Moreover, assuming the same set of facts as to his use of our Eddie Bauer Explorer and Highlander 4WD, then the following would be true.

Toyota Prius
      35,664 = miles 2007 to 2008 – 743 gallons at 48 mpg

2003 Eddie Bauer Explorer
      35,904 = miles 2003 to 2005 – 2,244 gallons at 16 mpg

2006 4WD Highlander
      21,762 miles 2006 – 837 gallons at 26 mpg

Rather hard to believe that vehicles that were always “garaged” could accumulate over 93,000 miles over a six-year period of time. Magical to say the least! Of course who knows, maybe Maria (that’d be Fabian’s wife and/or one or more of the kiddies) was driving your cars over the past several years. As the spouse and children of such a dedicated public servant, they deserve to drive your vehicles while you pay for the gas, right?
