Re: Pending election fraud charges involving Sen. Roderick Wright

Dear Mr. Demerjian:

Upon review of the 09/17/10 LA Times story by Jean Merl and Patrick McGreevy titled: “State Sen. Roderick Wright indicted on charges of voter fraud and perjury,” I went about reviewing various public records I’ve received in the past from Gregory Schmidt, Secretary of the State Senate.

Those records relate to Sen. Wright’s Dec 16, 2008 purchase of a Cadillac XLR Roadster from Galpin Motors in Van Nuys for his alleged use on official state business in the 25th Senate District. (See copy of sale receipt attached hereto)

Over the past fifteen or more years, I’ve spent a great deal of time investigating/reporting on abuses and/or outright fraud involving public officials throughout the country. As a result of my ongoing investigations, I have developed a methodology that allows me to determine early on in reviewing public records “who’s been naughty and who’s been nice.”

I’m sure that your office is more than capable of developing the necessary evidence to convince a jury that Sen. Wright is guilty of the eight felonies he’s been charged with. However, I would respectfully offer the following advice in building a case against Sen. Wright.
  1. Request contact info from Galpin Motors provided by Wright
  2. Request maintenance bills from Gregory Schmidt of State Senate for Wright’s XLR
  3. Interview neighbors of Inglewood fourplex to see if they ever saw a XLR parked there or if they witnessed any “Wright Sightings”
  4. Request telephone bills from Gregory Schmidt of State Senate for outgoing calls to LA
  5. Request records from Wright’s LA office for outgoing calls, etc
  6. Request info from Gregory Schmidt of State Senate where they mailed Wright’s per diem payments and his payroll checks
  7. Interview neighbors in Baldwin Hills re: any “Wright Sightings” and/or if they saw his XLR parked there
  8. Request Wright’s travel records (lodging, etc.) from Gregory Schmidt of State Senate
I would think that a review of Wright’s Senate records and/or those from Galpin Motors may well contain contact information such as his true address and/or home telephone number. As to Senate travel records, I suspect that you may be forced to issue a subpoena to obtain copies. When I requested said records in early 2009, Mr. Schmidt stated in his 3/24/09 letter: “We believe that the disclosure of their [Senators] air schedules and related travel information poses a serious risk to the security of the individual Senators and therefore, the public interest served by its disclosure is clearly outweighed by the public interest served in not making the disclosure public.” (See PDF copy of letter attached hereto – para. 1 of page 3)

It should be noted that the claimed “serious security risk” to Senators is novel to say the least. This is especially true since the requested records related to “past” travel receipts. Contrast this laughable claim to the fact that every state agency offered to provide me with the same travel records as did LA County and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department. Put simply Mr. Demerjian, California state legislators are the only and I mean only public employees I’ve ever come across that have the audacity to claim they have a lawful right to conceal state-paid-for travel records from public review.

I personally found the comments of Wright’s attorney, Winston Kevin McKesson absurd wherein he told the LA Times that while “preparing for the Senate, he lowered his stepmother’s rent on a unit attached to it so could live in one of the rooms.” This stated defense doesn’t pass the involuntary laugh test. Seemingly, Mr. Wright missed his calling as a stand-up comedian!

If there is anything I can further do to assist you in your ongoing investigation, please feel free to drop me a line.

Respectfully yours,
