Judge Stephen Yarbrough’s earnings as Ohio's Ultimate Travelin Man
Text box details (a) county, (b) roundtrip mileage, (c) time per roundtrip, (d) total trips + hours, (e) wages per trip at $57 per hour average, (f), total miles, and (g) total wages earned/paid.
In many states, a retired visiting judge is not paid for time spent traveling to or from an assignment due to the fact that he/she is reimbursed mileage.
Even though Yarbrough is a resident of Lucas County (Toledo area) on almost 400 occasions he actually billed the State and Lucas County (County pays 15% of wages) for the time he spent driving 15 miles from his home in Sylvania to the courthouse in downtown Toledo and back home.
March 2002 – July 2010 – Wages paid for Travel
The above mileage and wages does not include Yarbrough billing Butler, Franklin, Mahoning, Montgomery and other counties for wages he claimed to travel to and from a motel to the respective courthouses. Therefore, it is estimated that Yarbrough earned well in excess of $200,000 over the past eight (8) years for time spent as Ohio’s Ultimate Traveling Man.
Breaking this down would require an enormous amount of time and effort.
Willie Nelson’s old ditty “On the road again”
Did Judge Yarbrough inspire Willie Nelson to write his hit song “On the road again,” Hmmm, sure seems plausible, right? As a matter of fact, if this is true, and I believe it may well be, I suspect that Ol’ Willie’s first draft of his lyrics in honor of Judge Stephen Yarbrough may have gone something like this.
On the road again –
Just can’t wait to get on the road again.
The life I love is scamming you and your friends
And I can’t wait to get on the road again.
On the road again
Goin’ places that I’ve always been
Victimizing folks I may never see again
And I can’t wait to get on the road again
On the road again
Like a band of thieves we go down the highway
I’m the best of friends (that’d be mine and your money)
Insisting the state keep giving my way
And my way
Is on the road again
