Judge Cathy Prewitt of Corbin, KY; Judge Roy Bean Wannabee

FYIJudge Roy Bean was an infamous Justice of the Peace and saloon owner in Texas who called himself the "The Law West of the Pecos." Roy was also affectionately referred to as the Hanging Judge.

The state of Kentucky presented Cathy Eileen Prewitt with a law license in 1983 after she graduated from the University of Kentucky Law School.

The voters in and around Corbin, Kentucky were duped into reelecting Cathy as a District Court Judge for Whitley and McCreary Counties in 2010. She is up for reelection in 2019, and hopefully the voters will tell Cathy to take a hike.

The Kentucky Judicial Conduct Commission found Cathy guilty of the following misconduct.

In one matter, Judge Prewitt changed the bond of Steven Hinkle from $25,000 to $50,000 on May 12, 2014, without giving any notice of a hearing on the matter.

The change in the bond took place while Hinkle’s mother, Alma Ruth Hinkle, was attempting to pay the $25,000 bond at the Whitley County Circuit Clerk’s office.

Later on the same day, during a hearing in regards to the Hinkle case, Judge Prewitt held Alma Hinkle in contempt of court and ordered her to serve 24 hours in jail for allegedly calling her a “bitch” while she was in the clerk’s office trying to pay her son’s bond.

It should be noted that Mrs. Hinkle admitted that she referred to Prewitt as a bitch; however, in some circles in and around Wheatley County, calling Prewitt a bitch is considered to be a compliment.

The “bitch” comment was made outside the presence of Judge Prewitt. In an attempt to further her credentials as a Judge Roy Bean Wannabee, Prewitt held Mrs. Hinkle in contempt without providing her with notice (due process), a hearing, or the opportunity for her to have legal counsel present.

Apparently, Prewitt if of the opinion that “due process” is the means by which the grass becomes moist in the a.m. In truth, Cathy should change her name from "Prewitt" to "Dimwitt."

As a consequence of her misconduct, the Patron Saints for Judicial Misfits sitting on the Judicial Commission punished Cathy by gifting her with a complimentary 7-day suspension from the bench.

As we speak (ca. July 2015), Prewitt is back on the bench as a District Court judge in Corbin, Kentucky.
