Chief Justice Jean Toal of South Carolina; scofflaw, arrogant, moron, liar

After spending about twenty undistinguished years practicing law in South Carolina, Ms. Jean Hoefer Toal was successful in duping the voters into electing her as an associate justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court in 1986.

She again duped the voters into reelecting her to the Court in 1996 and in 2004 she was elected as Chief Justice.

Unforuntely, she'll be the Chief Justice until at least 2014!

Hit and run Toal

In early 2007, Justice Jean Toal was charged in a hit-and-run with a parked vehicle. Justice Toal struck an unoccupied, parked vehicle at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport. When busted by the Lexington County Sheriff’s office (somebody apparently ratted her out) she reluctantly returned to the scene of the accident.

This wasn’t the first time that Justice Toal was involved in a hit and run accident. In 2001, Chief Justice Toal was cited for leaving the scene of an accident and for speeding when her minivan sideswiped a part car, causing $3,500 in damages.

Unbelievably, when Justice Toal was questioned by police, she had the audacity to tell officers “she didn’t realize she had hit anything.”

How in the hell is it possible to cause $3,500 in damages to another vehicle (2001 dollars) and not realize you hit a parked car? This would be akin to the following dialogue take place between the late Jeffrey Dahmer and the police after he was arrested in Milwaukee.

This would be akin to actor Sean Penn telling the police in Hollywood after being arrested for punching some paparazzi that he “didn’t realize he had hit” the guy.”

Of course it goes without saying that Chief Justice Toal is an unmitigated liar, albeit a rather inept one. Seems as though she may have missed her calling as a standup comedian!

And what was Chief Justice Toal’s punishment for engaging in criminal conduct by leaving the scene of an accident? Well, the enablers/apologists at the South Carolina Commission on Judicial Conduct cleared her of any unethical conduct in 2002.

This only further proves that judges are held to a lower standard of conduct than we are, right?
